Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15x70 Binoculars with Tripod Adapter Review

These binoculars, packaged with the tripod adapter, offers you great value at a great price! Many experienced astronomers find binoculars much easier to use than the standard telescope you'd expect stargazers to use and these binoculars are a favorite choice of many users. The best eye relief for binoculars [the eyes distance behind the exit pupil to see the full exit image] is between 15mm and 20mm. These binoculars provide 18mm which is ideal. Additionally they come with rubber eye-cups meaning you will be able to use these both with and without glasses. Some individuals [including children and older adults] found them a little heavy to use so adding a binocular tripod makes a lot of sense with these binoculars. Note: to find the tripod mount simply unscrew the cap on the front that has the Celestron logo on it. The tripod adapter in the package seemed to be a little light for some users and they have recommended buying a sturdier adapter similar to this Vortex Optics Universal Binocular Tripod Adapter. But once you have a tripod, all the users have agreed that the viewing experience for these binoculars is great. Some users felt the carrying case that came with the package was not sturdy enough to protect the binoculars and have recommended buying a Pelican case to protect your investment. Hint: many users use the free open source Stellarium software (google it) to research and locate targets of interest.

"They are everything that a telescope is not...relatively cheap, light, easy use. And because they are so easy to use, you will end up using them much more often than you would a cumbersome telescope."

"The optics are truly amazing for the price. The field is wide, the image is bright, razor sharp and with fine contrast and color rendition. My complaint is with the center focusing mechanism which tends to drift and requires constant attention."

"I had read some reviews that they are really heavy and bulky, but I found that they were surprisingly light and easy to steady free handed. They are quite large, which means that they will take up more space than a normal binocular, but this is to be expected."

"They are the most stable 15X binoculars I have ever found...more stable, in fact, than some 10X or 12X models I have used."

"These are good binos when you get a well-collimated pair, but you have to be willing to test them. The tripod adapter is crap however. I will have to buy replacements that help dampen the oscillation faster. But overall I like these binos and my students are impressed when they use them."

"while the binoculars are more than worth the price, the cheap plastic tripod adapter included is not. Every time I would touch the binoculars, even with my nose, I would have to wait 30s just for it stop wobbling. I strongly suggest purchasing a separate tripod adapter equal to the task.

"...easy to hold, great optics, easy to focus, would buy again!!!!!"

"...Excellent piece of equipment. Almost takes the place of a telescope.great clarity day or night."

"I'm surprise the 15x70 Skymaster is light weight for its size and it provides sharp, bright images. The shake does not affect much my viewing (maybe my hands are somewhat stable)..."

"...I bought these binoculars for astronomy. The focus and crisp edges you get with high binoculars are not here with these celestron's."

"...After exploring the sky on the micro level for almost year with a small reflector, these binoculars finally opened macro level observations. It was wonderful to finally put things into a larger perspective. They gather an immense amount of light, with good clarity."

"these binochs are worth every penny. Images are clear and crisp! the night sky suddenly comes alive !I cant believe they are'nt twice as expensive."

"...I like the binoculars fine except for the fact that the left lens has some aberration in it that no amount of re-focus or tweaking the focus can overcome. I do not have any issues with the right lens, it is only the left one."

"...This are really good binoculars for the money. They are half the weight of Zuhmell 15x80's, better construction, and tack sharp focus. They are light enough that they can be used for short periods of time hand-held.."

"...ALOT for the $$$$ !!!!alittle to shaky for non tipod use, but can hand spot objects !!!"

"...We purchased these with our kids in mind. The price is great and they were able to see craters on the moon immediately. It is hard to keep the binoculars steady enough to view stars without the tripod."

"Overall, I am not very impressed with the quality of these binos. Yes, the price reflects that and I was well aware of this prior to purchasing but I feel if I had done my homework I would have realized that there are many other binoculars in this same price range and of better quality."

""...for large binoculars, they are lightweight.they are the best binoculars i have owned not for just the money but the best over all.i think they are the best thing without having to spend more money on a telescope..."

Retrevo Customer Score: 5 Star Rating

"Although images were a little soft across the outer 25% of the Celestron's field, the overall view was impressive nonetheless..."

"These were easy to use will laying on my back, however, i must say while standing or sitting up a tripod is recommended to steady the view as they are heavy for hand held observing..."

"Solid feel, easy to adjust the fit and finish of the package is very good..."

"In use, I've found these binoculars' images sharp and with adequate contrast to enjoy star clusters such as the Hyades and Pleiades, along with the moon and planetary observations..."

Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15x70 Binoculars with Tripod Adapter

Conclusion

Overall, these are great binoculars for the price and offer qualities and optics you'd pay a lot more for in another set of binoculars. As mentioned above, these giant binoculars can be a bit difficult to handle for children or for those with small hands but the tripod adapter allows you to quickly connect a tripod and offers you a lot of bang for your buck! Highly recommended by many users.
